Visceral (Parietal) Fascia: The Organ Support System The visceral layer covers, supports, and suspends the organs within their cavities. It holds your organs in place, like the lungs (pleura), heart (pericardium), abdomen (peritoneum), and brain and spinal cord (meninges). What is Fascia Made Of? Fascia consists of three key components that give it strength, flexibility, and the ability to protect and support the body’s tissues. The benefits of myofascial release differ from those of deep tissue massage because it uniquely works through these layers. 1. Collagen Collagen fibers are made of long molecules built from three polypeptide chains. These tough, white fibers are stronger than steel! Collagen gives our tissues structure, resilience, and strength. It is produced by the fibroblasts contained within the fascia. 2. Elastin Elastin fibers give fascia its stretch and ability to absorb shock. These rubber-like fibers are found in muscles, ligaments, and tendons. They allow tissues to return to their shape after movement. 3. Ground Substance Think of this like the WD-40 for our body. This viscous, gel-like, transparent fluid fills the spaces between cells and fibers in fascia. It’s a mucopolysaccharide consisting mostly of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and proteoglycans. HA is what’s used in dermal fillers to restore facial volume. Ground substance lubricates everything by attracting water. As a result, our tissues can slide and glide over each other, allowing us to move our joints and skin freely. Fascia Stiffens with Age, Injury, & Sedentary Lifestyles As we age, become sedentary, or recover from injuries and surgeries, our tissues tend to stiffen. How can Epsom salt baths help me?

How can Epsom salt baths help me? Do you ever wonder if epsom salt baths really can help you feel better? When our clients complain of sore, aching muscles, we highly recommend a long soak in a warm tub with 2 cups of Epsom salts (not recommended for use in a tub with jets).  Many holistic care practitioners will tell you it is not only great for sore muscles, but also for detoxing the body. It is something you can safely do every 3 days.  Think of what a warming treat this can be during the cooler winter weather. What is Epsom salt? It is a naturally occurring miner salt originally discovered about 400 years ago in “Epsom”, a town in England.  It is compound made of magnesium and sulfur (nothing like table salt so do not try to taste it!).  Epsom salt can be purchase in large size bags at most chain grocery stores and pharmacies.  It is a white in color and looks like an extremely course version of regular table salt. Why do you need it? Minerals play an extremely important role in the functioning of the human skeleton, soft (muscle) tissues and for helping regulatory functions such as electrical impulses, energy production, blood clotting, oxygen transport, and enzymatic activity. Magnesium, calcium and phosphorus, are needed in large amounts and known as “macro-minerals”.  It has been said that magnesium is the second most abundant element in human cells.  According to WebMD, magnesium is crucial to the body’s function. Magnesium helps keep blood pressure normal, bones strong, and the heart rhythm steady. According to CARE2, sulfates play an important role in the formation of brain tissue, joint proteins and the proteins that line the walls of the digestive tract. They stimulate the pancreas to generate digestive enzymes and are thought to help detoxify of medicines and environmental contaminates. Most sources agree that there is a there is a widespread magnesium deficiency. Our magnesium levels have dropped by half in the last century due to changes in agriculture and diet. Industrial farming has depleted magnesium from soil and the typical American diet contains much less magnesium than that of our forefathers. And in fact, the modern American diet with its fat, sugar, salt and protein actually works to speed up the depletion of magnesium from our bodies. How your body can absorb more magnesium So why isn’t there a magnesium supplement craze? Studies show that magnesium is not easily absorbed through the digestive tract. The presence of specific foods or drugs, certain medical conditions, and the chemistry of a person’s stomach acid can render magnesium supplements ineffective. However, studies do show increased magnesium levels from soaking in a bath enriched with Epsom salt absorbed by the skin. If this is true, we’d all benefit from soaking in a tub at least three times per week with two cups of Epsom Salt for at least 12 minutes. (If you are pregnant or have any health concerns, please check with your doctor before using Epsom salts.) Taking your Epsom salt bath one step further Add several drops of beautiful, aromatic essential oils.  For relaxation we recommend lavender, or, for a balancing mood booster – geranium.  A soft candle flame can help to further to calm and relax at the end of a hectic day.  Lastly, to really transport yourself into a zen state of mind, play a spa music track from youtube and allow yourself to drift away.  You deserve it! Chemical Versus Physical Sunscreen: What’s the Difference?

Chemical Versus Physical Sunscreen: What’s the Difference? The concept of wearing sunscreen year-round to protect the health and appearance of your skin is nothing new (especially here in South Florida). Sunscreen provides anti-aging benefits and protects your skin from sun damage that can lead to not only fine lines and wrinkles but also skin cancer.  But you’ve also probably heard the alternative argument that sunscreen is just as bad, if not worse, as exposing yourself to the sunshine’s rays because of the breakdown of chemicals used to create these products. So what do you do? There’s actually two different types of sunscreens – chemical versus physical sunscreen. And sometimes you really shouldn’t use one or the other, and other times you’ll probably want to. When choosing between chemical and physical sunscreen, it’s important to learn what each of them do. Here are the differences between chemical versus physical sunscreen and which one may be best suited for you: Chemical Sunscreen Chemical sunscreen penetrates into the skin and absorbs UV rays. The main active compounds in chemical sunscreens are avobenzone, octinoxate, octisalate and oxybenzone. These ingredients create a chemical reaction that converts the UV rays into heat that is then released out of the skin.  This may sound scary because of the fact that the sunscreen absorbs into the skin, leading to the potential of more systemic absorption. There is not enough available literature to come to either conclusion though. One of the primary concerns with one of chemical sunscreen’s main ingredients, oxybenzone, is that it can cause hormonal and endocrine disruption. The results of tests conducted though are inconclusive in their attribution to sunscreen. One common observable result of chemical sunscreen though is allergic skin reactions.  Physical Sunscreen Physical sunscreens contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide mineral ingredients which barely (if at all) absorb into the skin like chemical sunscreens do. Rather, physical sunscreen sits on top of the skin and deflects UV rays.  Just because physical sunscreens do not penetrate the skin does not mean that they do not contain any “harsh” chemical ingredients though, as these may be necessary to reduce exposure to UV rays. Chemical Versus Physical Sunscreen: Which One is Best for You? At Balance Spa, we value the health of our clients and their skin therefore valuing the importance of avoiding sun damage. While you should take other preventative measures as well, one important step to preventing sun damage is by using sunscreen, but it’s integral to make sure you are using a quality product. We carry a variety of types of SPF protection products and strive to only carry the best of the best in our shop. So how do you choose?  Regardless of if you use chemical sunscreen or physical sunscreen, both are great, but for different reasons.  That being said, chemical sunscreen is better for use while swimming as it has a water-resistant formulation. It’s also better for people who play sports and sweat a lot. Physical sunscreen is not as effective in these instances because it can easily come off. Although, chemical sunscreen can create discoloration and irritate the skin. Physical sunscreen tends to be less irritating, and is beneficial for people who have more sensitive or heat-activated skin. It’s more moisturizing than chemical sunscreen (without clogging pores) and is effective right away after application. Sometimes, physical sunscreen is difficult to fully blend into the skin though, leaving a white residue. However, brands are introducing matte and tinted varieties. Ultimately, you can’t go wrong utilizing both, depending on the activities you’re doing that day. How Frequently to Reapply Sunscreen Whether you use chemical or physical sunscreen, you need to know when to apply and reapply it. We recommend applying sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outside but make sure to wait at least 10 minutes before getting dressed to prevent your clothing from rubbing any sunscreen off. Experts suggest reapplying at least every two hours, or after you’re exposed to water or sweating. Even if your sunscreen is labeled as water-resistant, you should still actively reapply it. To avoid forgetting, set a timer on your smartphone. Additionally, you should ask for help if you can’t reach certain places on your body to ensure even coverage. When getting started with sunscreen application, we recommend following the teaspoon rule of one teaspoon per each part of your body (i.e. 1 teaspoon for your face, neck and ears, 1 teaspoon for each of your legs, etc.). How to Treat Sunburn Sometimes you may forget to reapply though. Sunburns happen to everyone and if you find yourself with one, there are ways to treat it quickly and effectively.  Something you might not think about when treating a sunburn is hydration. Sunburns cause dehydration, so be sure to drink plenty of fluids.  To reduce inflammation and minimize the burn, you should also apply cool towels onto the sunburned areas. First, simply place a couple of moist towels into the freezer for 15 minutes and then apply to sunburned skin for a soothing experience.  Aloe is also great for treating sunburns. Look for natural aloe though, not aloe containing additional ingredients as those could irritate the sunburn even more.   There’s a difference between having a common treatable sunburn and having a more serious condition that requires medical attention though. If you experience dizziness, nausea, fevers, or other worrying symptoms, it’s integral that you see a doctor. Chemical Versus Physical Sunscreen: What to Use While sunburns happen, it’s best to avoid them as much as possible. Your body has two circulatory systems, one of them is your bloodstream and the other is your lymph system. It runs throughout your body, and has two pathways, one deep and one superficial. Lymph fluid itself is clear and colorless. It contains white blood cells that bathe your tissues in nutrients and drains them of toxins.  Your lymphatic system fights against infections as it courses through its pathways draining into your bloodstream. The origins of lymphatic drainage. Lymphatic massage, (sometimes called manual lymphatic drainage [MLD]), is a specialized form of medical massage created in the 1930’s by Dr. Emil Vodder. Dr Vodder was a Danish medical doctor who treated patients in the French Riviera.  He noticed that people who had chronic colds also had swollen lymph nodes. Along with his wife, Enid, who was also a medical doctor, he began to study the lymph system. He went on to develop a protocol using specific hand movements which stimulate and move the lymphatic fluid in the body.  In 1936, after four years of research they introduced this technique to the world in Paris, France. They spent the rest of their lives demonstrating and teaching this method. Dr. Vodder’s lymphatic massage techniques use rhythmic manipulations to stimulate lymph flow and fluid movement. After much success with his patients, he developed a series of techniques for a more systematic approach. Thish became known as Manual Lymph Drainage. Today, Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage (MLD) is one of the most widely practiced massage techniques in the world. Do you need MLD? How it helps you feel better. Inactivity Lymphatic massage is helpful for everyone. This is especially true if you sit at a desk all day or lead an inactive lifestyle. The lymph system does not circulate like blood flow (which has the heart as a pump) or other bodily fluids. It relies on physical activity/movement to properly move lymph fluid through the body. While conventional massage therapy might focus on deeper, tight muscles, MLD focuses on the lymphatic system, which is situated just millimeters below the skin’s surface. The therapist applies very light pressure to stretch the skin and push lymph flow in the correct direction. This specialized and deeply relaxing technique aims to help the body maintain proper blood circulation, body fluid balance, and immune function urination.  Lymphatic drainage is a manual massage technique stimulating the lymphatic system to work more efficiently by moving the lymph to the lymph nodes [located throughout your body, but largely located in your neck, armpits, and groin]. The lymph nodes filter out harmful substances. The therapist applies very light pressure to stretch the skin and boost lymph flow in the correct direction. This specialized and deeply relaxing technique aims to help the body maintain proper blood circulation, body fluid balance, and immune function urination. The capillaries, in the lymphatic system, then filter waste and toxins (such as excess protein, white blood cells and fats). A healthy, intact lymphatic system collects your lymph, filters it, and returns it to your heart via a network of lymph vessels and lymph nodes. The waste that is pumped through the lymph nodes is then excreted by means of sweat, feces, urine as well as through the liver and kidneys. Dry Brushing Just For The Body Dry brushing, also known as dry body brushing, is a popular technique that uses a brush to gently exfoliate your skin with gentle massage-like strokes. It’s simple: you just rub a stiff-bristled bath or shower brush in gentle circles all over your body.  This is best done before showering or bathing (that’s where the “dry” part comes in). Dry brushing is similar to exfoliating with a scrub or a washcloth.  The massage action packs in some extra benefits. This technique increases circulation and stimulates the nervous system, in addition to getting rid of dead skin cells and unclogging pores. Exfoliating is an important step in detoxying the body through the removal of dead skin cells.  To restore the skin’s natural moisture after dry brushing and showering, apply a lotion or oil. How does dry brushing help my skin? It can help detoxify the body and improve the quality of skin. Besides the surface-level benefits from exfoliation, you can use dry brushing to promote lymphatic drainage. The body’s lymphatic system naturally removes dead cells, waste, and toxins from your body.  However, a slow moving or overloaded lymphatic system may need a little help. That’s what causes swollen lymph nodes when you are fighting off an infection. Body brushing helps improve circulation, which moves things along in the lymph system. You can loosen dead skin cells by dry brushing before a bath or shower so that they can be washed off. Those dead skin cells might otherwise stay attached to your body, creating a dry, flaky appearance. They can also clog pores, leading to ingrown hairs. Therefore, dry body brushing can help prevent or reduce the occurrence of ingrown hairs all over your body. There are other claims about the benefits of body brushing, such as a reduction in the appearance of scars and stretch marks or removing cellulite.  Many of them are not supported by scientific or medical research, however. Nonetheless, if you find it helpful for your skin, there’s no harm in trying it. Dry Body Brushing at Home Brushing your body is easy to do at home, and the cost is just the initial brush purchase. You can find bath or shower brushes for body brushing at most drug stores and beauty retailers. We recommend using a dry brush with natural tempico bristles as recommended by Dr. Bernard Jensen or something similar. You might find it helpful to buy a brush with a long handle to make it easier to reach your back. To start body brushing, move the brush in smooth circles around your whole body. Try to work the brush in the direction of the major lymphatic ducts as you see in the diagram below. Dry brushing will help to detoxify you further by encouraging the flow of lymph in your body. If your skin feels very dry, you might want to stand in the bath or shower (without the water on) to brush your skin. This way the skin cells won’t end up on your floor. Further Detoxifying & Relaxation If you’re interested in furthering the detoxifying benefits of body brushing at home, you can pair it with a warm epsom salt bath or apple cider vinegar soak. Some people find this extra helpful when they have a cold. One of the best benefits of dry body brushing is that it gives you a specific time to relax and focus on yourself.  Many of us spend time caring for our hair or face. Only to realize that we are neglecting the rest of our body. It’s important to show your skin some love. Dry brushing can feel like an active exfoliation, but it should not be painful. You shouldn’t apply much pressure to your skin with the brush. If it feels too intense, you can try to be more gentle or take a break for a few days. That said, dry body brushing might not be the best choice if you have open cuts, a rash, psoriasis, or eczema. In that case, talk to your doctor before dry brushing, or exfoliate with a washcloth instead. How to Make the Most of Your Massage For most of us, having a massage is a very welcome treat! And they don’t usually happen every day, so you want to know how to make the most of your massage. Making a few mindful choices before and after your appointment can transform your experience and make it that much better. As massage therapists, we want to give you some insider tips on making the most of your experience. 11 Tips to Make the Most of Your Massage Therapy Appointment 1. Shower Before is Better Than After You can do a few things before your massage to enjoy your experience. Having a shower before has multiple benefits. Firstly, being clean is nice not only for you but for your massage therapist as well! Also, the relaxation effect of a warm shower will help your muscles relax, enhancing the work of the therapist. If possible, skip lotions, oils, or heavy creams on the day of your treatment. This allows the therapist to work more effectively with your skin and muscles. It can also lead to a better absorption of any oils used during your treatment. 2. Don’t Leave Your Work Out Until Later It is tough prioritizing when you want to get multiple activities squeezed into one day. But there is no reason to skip your workout, as a good workout will warm your muscles up nicely. The massage will also feel so much better after a good workout. Don’t be tempted to convince yourself you will work out after the massage. You will probably be too relaxed! 3. Consistency is Key One massage every few years is not going to do the trick. If you want to maintain muscle health and help prevent future injuries, having a massage once a month or every 6 weeks is the minimum you need. Suppose you have specific injuries in more than one area. In that case, it is usually not possible to address everything in one 60-minute session. Massage therapy should be part of your long-term wellness routine. 4. Eat Light and Not Right Before Firstly, lying on a full belly is uncomfortable, but massage also stimulates digestion. That’s why eating a big, heavy meal right before is not a good idea. Eat a meal a few hours prior and a very light snack shortly before your massage. Don’t skip eating. If you do, you could feel light-headed or dizzy during the massage. 5. Be Specific When You Schedule Before you pick up the phone to book your appointment, think about the experience you want. Take a mental check of your body and mind. Decide if you need a deep tissue massage to really work out the muscle tension. Or determine if you just need to relax. When you call to schedule, let the coordinator know which 6. Undress for Success Removing all your clothing can seem awkward. But remember, your private parts will remain covered at all times. Licensed massage therapists are trained in the art of “draping.” This allows them to uncover only the areas they are working on. You may undress to the point where you feel comfortable. You do not have to remove all of your clothing. However, underclothes can sometimes interrupt the flow of a massage stroke. So, disrobing fully is recommended if you’re after the ultimate experience. 7. Schedule For Ultimate Enjoyment Sometimes, we see clients coming and going in a mad rush. It doesn’t seem they are getting the most enjoyment out of their massage. We recommend scheduling ahead of time. Don’t try to squeeze it in between an already hectic schedule. Ideally, you want to arrive in an open, relaxed frame of mind so you can leave feeling even better. Get the full benefit of relaxation by avoiding scheduling stressful meetings or events right after your massage. 8. Just Say So Do not worry that your therapist will feel slighted. Feel free to ask them to go deeper, lighter, or spend more time in one area. Massage therapists actually appreciate the feedback! It helps them structure the treatment based on your needs. This is your message, and you should get what you need.  Think of what you would like to get out of your massage before entering the treatment room. Then, communicate that to your therapist during the intake discussion. If you have any health issues, injuries, or conditions, discuss them with your therapist beforehand. They can tailor the service to your needs and avoid any areas that might be sensitive or painful. 9. Pain is Not Always Gain Just because it does not hurt, does not mean it’s not working! We promise! Some light tenderness or a feeling of release is normal. The idea is to get the muscle to stretch lightly and release. This happens more readily when the muscle is relaxed.  If too much pressure is applied, the muscle tends to tense. This creates the opposite effect of the intention of the massage. Don’t hesitate to let your therapist know if something hurts! 10. Make the Most of Your Massage by Unwinding Afterward After your massage, take a moment to ease back into your day. Bring that sense of inner calm and peace with you. Ensure you have a moment to rest and reflect afterward. Listen to your body. Everyone’s experience is different. If you feel tired, let yourself rest. If you feel energized, enjoy that uplift! Pay attention to how your body feels and respond accordingly. 11.
