Why Choose LED For Your Facial Treatment?

LED Facial For Acne, Wrinkles & More You may have heard of the relatively new scientific-sounding technology called LED.  LED (which is short for “Light Emitting Diodes”), is FDA cleared for the treatment of facial wrinkles and pain in the body. Many day spas and medical spas are using LED light therapy to treat aging skin, acne and muscle/joint aches/pains.   Research has shown that LED phototherapy can:   Because if it’s well known healing and anti-inflammatory properties, phototherapy is used in many clinical settings. At Balance Spa, we use the LIGHTSTIM PRO PANEL for our professional LED Facial treatment and in other treatments. The LightStim ProPanel Anti-Aging Light works synergistically with other treatments to help tone the skin and product a radiant glow. In FDA clinical studies 100% of participants showed improvement in their fine lines and wrinkles in just 8 weeks! The Anti-Aging Pro panel four wavelengths: LED: At Home And At The Spa Fortunately, LED can be done daily in the comfort of your home or when you are relaxing for your facial treatment at the spa. LightStim make powerful at home, hand-held LED lights, for purchase in our retail store at Balance Spa. The Anti-Aging light retails for $249 and the Acne Light for $169. Basic LED Facts In short, a LED treatment is the application of light energy (photons) to your tissue to gain therapeutic benefit.  Each light emitting diode contains a tiny computer chip encased in glass. Each LED wavelength (color) of light provides unique therapeutic benefits. LED is non-invasive, painless and requires no recovery time. LED light is great for all skin types and designed to emit a soothing gentle warmth. As photosynthesis is used by plants, so LED energy is used by the body to as energy to stimulate the body’s natural restorative processes. LightStim emits UV-free beneficial light rays that can help reduce and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, destroy acne-causing bacteria, and assist the body in its inherent pain-relieving process. LED Facial Treatment For Acne The LightStim professional Acne Light destorys acne-causing bacteria (propionibacterium acnes) to minimize future breakouts. The home-use hand-held light uses two wavelengths: Additionally, it reduces redness and treatment time is only 3 minutes per area. During our acne facials at Balance Spa, we use the hand-held Acne Light after performing extractions to kill bacteria and reduce redness. Naturally Erase Wrinkles with a LED Facial Treatment During the process of aging, our skin loses its plump youthful appearance allowing fine lines and wrinkles. LightStim provides rejuvenating wavelengths for light energy to treat fine lines and wrinkles. When using your hand-held LightStim at home, you can help to recapture that plump, youthful appearance. To see these type of results, use your light 5 – 7 days per week for 3 minutes per area of the face. LED For Aches, Pains & Wounds Indeed scientific research shows that LightStim LED relieves arthritic pain, muscle and joint pain and stiffness.  Firstly photoacceptors in the mitochondria absord the powerful and deeply penetrating wavelengths. Following, this process increases the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) -the fuel that drives all cells. Finally, it is this boost of cellular energy that results in a cascade of metabolic events leading to an increase in micro-circulation, tissue repair, and a decrease in swelling and pain. The Professional Pain Light by LightStim uses four wavelengths to achieve efficacy: About LightStim Although doing a quick Amazon search will display many interesting looking LED devices sadly, many of them are not based on legitimate research.  For this reason, LightStim is the brand of LED equipment we use at Balance Spa.  We believe that using professional, proven LED equipment is essential to achieving results. It is not surprising that LightStim is the number one choice for Dermatologists, plastic surgeons and health professionals. As a result of their two decades of experience, patented technology, certifications and FDA Clearances, LightStim set themselves apart from their competition. Deep Tissue Massage vs New Pair of Shoes

Deep Tissue Massage vs New Pair of Shoes Why I’d Rather Splurge on a Deep Tissue Massage than a Pair of Shoes Sounds crazy, right? I thought so, too. I mean, a pair of shoes lasts forever. And a deep tissue massage lasts 60 minutes. Sixty fleeting–albeit blissful–minutes. As you might have guessed, I’ve now changed my mind. The other day, I had a deep tissue massage for the first time ever. I know, I know– I’d been missing out. 20 years old and more than enough stress build-up to justify one, and still no massage. Actually, I lied: I’d had a 30-minute massage once, at a large chain massage emporium-type place, but that’s it.  Sigh… Sad, really. Anyways. My massage may technically only have lasted 60 minutes, but the experience had all these lasting impacts on my life that I hadn’t even anticipated. First let me just tell you about the experience of the 60 minutes themselves. You know all those knots in your back or the weird sharp pains you sometimes get that bother you all the time, but there’s nothing you can really do about them? Like, you can gripe and complain to the unwitting listeners around you, but let’s be real: they don’t care. They don’t physically feel your back pain and they don’t have any sort of power against it; so they can listen to you whine, but that’s where it ends. Well, telling my massage therapist was a whole different story. She cared. And she somehow magically had the skills to know exactly how to fix those knots and pains. She (her name was Patricia) told me she also works at a chiropractor’s office part-time, and has learned a lot there about fixing specific back problems. She knows how to target the exact problem areas so that they actually are fixed, instead of just glazing over them with the rest of the massage and leaving you needing more to really help the pain. After my deep tissue massage, the most problematic areas of my back got the exact attention and care they needed to ease the aches and pains. I know, #blessed. At the chain I’d been to for the 30 minute massage, there was none of that specificity. It was like I walked in and I walked out, barely even leaving them with my name; they didn’t think they’d see me again, so they were like “Peace out!” and I took the cue and left. But at this smaller spa, everything and everyone just tried harder to make sure I got the benefits from the deep tissue massage I deserved. Sure, I didn’t get the big-business bargains, but I got a way better massage. Worth it, in my opinion. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if I’d stumbled upon the best deep tissue massage in Boca Raton. So there was that. And then there’s the whole “zoning-out” process of the massage. It’s like you sink into this head space where it’s just you and your body and all the stress of life drains into the heated bed beneath you and you just lay there and… well, forget. That’s the real beauty of it I think. We’re all so weighed down by the constant craziness of to-do lists and responsibilities and other fruitless worries, like whether or not our hair looks okay. But none of that fluff really matters. When you’re in that room, all the nonsense tunes out for awhile, and you zone out and enter into this point of clarity where only the things that really, truly matter are left in your head; the rest has been filtered through. At the end of the deep tissue massage they do this head massage bit, where all the relaxation you’ve been feeling in your body finally permeates into your brain. It’s really kind of an amazing finale– you just lay there on your back and let the tension you didn’t know could be hiding in your scalp just fall away. And then it’s over. Emerging from a massage is perhaps the strangest experience to ever occur indoors. You put your clothes on, try to remember how it was you ever restricted your newly-massaged feet with shoes, and then sprout from the room like a tiny faun who’s forgotten how to exist in the normal business of everyday life. You emerge from the dimly lit room, and there’s your massage therapist, awaiting you with a smile and a cup of water. There’s tea and a hot towel awaiting you as well, as if you’re this revered goddess of serenity whose every need for comfort is effortlessly fulfilled. You pad your softened feet into the lobby of the spa and accept the water graciously, half expecting fountains to burst from the ground beneath you and ferns to grow from the walls. That initial feeling slowly wears off, of course. But the muscle tension release, stress evaporation, and other various benefits remain. They’ve sunken into your skin for you to keep. I experienced some of this later that same day. I exercise most days and have grown accustomed to experiencing the unpredictable aches and stiffness of my muscles during a workout. It often holds me back from working at my best. But after my massage that day, I didn’t have a single issue. In fact, during my workout I felt much more energized than I usually did. I could feel my blood flow work more efficiently during cardio and I was in a much better head space to push myself and get the most out of my hour. Who would’ve thunk that a relaxing massage would make me more motivated to run? So really, my body, my mind, and even my spirits were positively effected, and the 60 short minutes of the massage permeated their peaceful way through the rest of my day (and future days). All of these experiences got me thinking: why hadn’t I indulged sooner? Why had I, so many times (too many if I’m being honest), justified purchasing a particularly pricey pair of shoes or an especially shnazzy new dress,

Reflexology: How it Works

Reflexology: How it Works What is Reflexology? Reflexology is a gentle therapy focusing on specific points in your feet, hands, or ears. Each point is connected to a specific organ or system in the body. When I apply gentle pressure to these areas, I help promote overall wellness and restore balance. My goal is to support your body’s natural ability to heal. What are the Benefits of Reflexology? Reflexology is unique in that its benefits span across the body and its systems. You can come to an appointment experiencing back pain, headaches, sleep problems, stress, or other issues. Whatever it may be, we can often find specific points in your feet, hands, or ears to address it. As a whole, it provides holistic benefits such as: How Does Reflexology Work? When I apply pressure on specific reflex points, it sends signals through your nervous system, encouraging relaxation and healing. This process can release tension and improve your energy flow. Life Energy To understand how it works, we have to first explore the concept of energy and how it flows through our body. What is Energy? You’ll find that different cultures, ideologies, and parts of the world have unique definitions of energy. At the core, they all describe a powerful, connective force: Energy therapist Dr. John Veltheim puts it perfectly: ‘Science tells us that everything is energy and that matter is nothing more than energy in a different form.’ Meridians ‘Qi’ or energy flows through our bodies in specific channels called “meridians.” Try visualizing meridians by thinking of how blood flows through blood vessels. Meridians are not visible like arteries or veins but can sometimes be seen with infrared imaging. It is through the meridians that the energy from our vital organs is transported to the body’s surface. When we are in a state of disease, it is believed that there is a blockage in the energy flow of that particular organ. The main meridians either begin or end in our feet or hands. This is where reflexology comes in. Unblocking Uric Acid & Calcium Crystals The feet lie farthest from the heart. As a result, circulation in this area often slows down. Gravity pulls waste materials, like uric acid and calcium crystals, to the bottom of the feet, where they can build up and create blockages. By working the underpart of our feet (or hands and ears), we are trying to clear blockages, thereby reestablishing correct energy flow. This allows the body to bring itself back to optimal health. So, as I tell many clients, reflexology alone cannot diagnose or cure any disease. However, it can reunite the body with optimal balance and facilitate internal healing. Reflexology “Thumb Walking” Technique A specific technique is used called “thumb walking” whereby the practitioner uses their thumbs and fingers to “walk” across specific zones on the feet or hands. This technique (combined with pressure) helps break down uric acid or calcium crystals. Also, traditional reflexology does not use lubricants like oil or lotion. Still, it is done just on the skin or with talcum powder. My understanding is the lack of lubrication increases friction, and direct contact aids in breaking down blockages. Reflexology Foot-Zone Mapping There are several theories about the “mapping” of the foot. From what I’ve seen, the most widespread method is “zone therapy.” This was created by the American Dr. William Fitzgerald. During his research into pain relief, he established that pressure applied to one part of the body could have an anesthetic effect on another part away from the pressure site. For example, applying wooden cloth pegs to the fingers created an anesthetic effect on the ear, nose, face, jaw, shoulder, arm, and hand. In this way, he was able to perform minor surgery using just zone therapy, without anesthetics. So, what we are trying to do in a reflexology treatment is apply pressure to areas in the ten zones. This sends a signal throughout the nervous system to the brain. In turn, this stimulates the internal organs to regulate and improve their function. Reflexology In The Treatment Room: What to Expect Let’s put aside the “science” for a moment. Allow me to expand briefly on the client experience. I am always amazed by the profound relaxation effect of touching or massaging the feet. During a session at Balance Spa, as I begin working the feet, it’s as if a wave of relaxation washes over the room. I even find myself becoming more relaxed (in a focused way) while working on a client’s feet. Performing reflexology versus a massage on the feet only intensifies the relaxation effect. Next time you receive a massage and the therapist begins working your feet, notice how your body reacts. There is definitely a special energy in the feet that affects the entire body. How Long is a Reflexology Appointment? Our reflexology sessions are usually 30 minutes. During this time, we will do the thumb walking technique on both feet covering all zones. H3: Are Reflexology Appointments Painful? No — reflexology appointments should be relaxing. There may be some tension when we first map out your preferences and pain levels. As I’m working the feet, I pay attention to what I’m feeling under my fingers and thumbs. Suppose I feel anything slightly “crunchy” or hard. In that case, I will usually go back and cover the area again (unless it’s painful to touch, I would avoid that area). We also incorporate some relaxation techniques at the beginning or end of the session. The pressure is usually firm but is always adjusted according to the client’s preference. Is Reflexology Safe for Everyone? Reflexology is a gentle therapy that’s typically safe for most people. Speak with your doctor first before booking your appointment if you’re: While generally safe and low-risk, we want to make sure you’re 100% ready to receive the benefits. Book a Reflexology Appointment in Boca Raton For total relaxation and re-balancing, I would highly recommend adding a 30 minute reflexology session to

Need a Boost? Here’s The Best Health Massage for Immunity

Best Health Massage for a Stronger Immune System You’ve probably booked a massage to help you relax. But did you know a health massage can also support your immune system? It’s true. Pairing certain massage techniques with immune-boosting ingredients like castor oil and essential oils can actually help your body’s defense and recovery. So whether you’re just getting over a cold, trying to stay healthy during flu season, or just want to feel your best, an immunity-boosting health massage can help. In fact, it may be exactly what your body’s asking for. Keep reading to see how massage can help your immune system. We’ll share what makes an Immuno Massage different from the usual spa day in Boca Raton, covering topics like: Benefits of Massage When Sick or Trying to Stay Healthy Wondering how to boost your immune system when sick? Massage therapy can be a natural way to help build up your defenses. Please note: When you’re actively contagious, we recommend waiting to book a massage until you’re in the clear. Once you’re recovering or looking to prevent getting sick, a targeted health massage can offer natural immune support.  Boost Circulation Your immune system works better when you have healthy circulation. Massage helps increase blood flow. That way, your body can deliver nutrients where they’re needed and remove waste more efficiently.  Relieves Stress (One of the Biggest Immunosuppressors) Chronic stress messes with everything, including your immune system. When you’re stressed, your body releases a hormone called cortisol. If this happens too much, it can hurt your immune function over time. Fortunately, massage can help lower cortisol levels, calm your nervous system, and even improve sleep. These are all key players when you’re trying to stay healthy or bounce back after being sick. Encourages White Blood Cell Activity White blood cells are your body’s natural defense team. Some experts suggest that regular massage can actually increase their activity. This makes it easier for your body to fight off viruses or bacteria. Helps Ease Pain & Inflammation After Illness Still feeling the effects after a cold or flu? Massage may help reduce inflammation after illness. It can soothe your sore muscles and support faster recovery, especially if you’ve been stuck in bed and your body feels stiff or drained. What is an Immuno Health Massage?   An Immuno Health Massage is a specially designed massage that supports your immune system. It uses soothing techniques, like essential oils for immunity, castor oil packs, cooled face cradles, and moist heat therapy. Some wellness spas offer immunotherapy add-ons for their Swedish or Deep Tissue massages. With these add-ons, the treatment becomes a functional health massage that helps your body reset, recharge, and defend itself more effectively. BOOK AN IMMUNO MASSAGE IN BOCA RATON, FL What to Expect During an Immuno Health Massage You may continue feeling the benefits of massage when sick long after your appointment. But our clients at Balance Spa Boca also love how they feel during the treatment. Watch the video below to see what this health massage add-on looks like: We’ll Personalize the Pressure to Fit You Before your Immuno Health Massage begins at Balance Spa, we take a moment to understand your preferences. That may be the light, relaxing strokes of a Swedish massage or the stronger pressure of a Deep Tissue massage. Either way, we’ll adjust the session to match your comfort level. Once you’re settled, we begin layering in the various immune-boosting elements that set this massage apart. Castor Oil & Essential Oils for Immunity While you’re lying face down, we apply warm castor oil blended with essential oils known for their immune-supportive properties. This is Balance Spa Boca’s exclusive in-house blend inspired by the legendary “four thieves” recipe. We then place a Chattanooga Theratherm Moist Heat Pack over your back to work its magic. The pack helps the oils absorb deeply while relaxing your muscles. This part of your treatment lasts 10 to 15 minutes. Many clients say it’s when they enter a deeply calming, restorative state. Curious why we use castor oil for massages? Click here to learn more. Leg & Foot Massage  Your massage therapist starts to work on your legs as you slip into a state of relaxation. Then, we’ll apply a few drops of peppermint essential oil to the soles of your feet and move the heated pack to your feet. Back & Shoulder Massage With your feet relaxing under warmth, we return to your back and shoulders. Thanks to the prior application of heat and oils, your muscles are already softened and ready for deeper work. You’ll feel lingering tension release as the massage promotes circulation, and supports your body’s recovery. Finishing Touches: Face-Up & Aromatherapy By the time we invite you to turn over, your room is filled with a healing aroma. You’ll breathe in clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary. We continue the massage, apply a cooled face cradle, finish with a deep, calming inhalation of the “four thieves” blend. It’s the final grounding moment in this unique massage for your immune system, combining warmth, touch, and aromatherapy for a deeply healing experience. Why Castor Oil for Immunity? Castor oil has long been used in natural health for its immune-supportive and anti-inflammatory properties. When applied as a warm pack, it may help stimulate lymphatic circulation and support the body’s natural detox process — both key components of a strong immune response. While more research is needed, some studies suggest castor oil packs may encourage white blood cell activity. Over time, this makes them a gentle, natural way to support your immune health. Why Moist Heat Packs for Immuno Massage? Moist heat therapy is a powerful add-on in any health massage. It penetrates deeper than dry heat. You may experience increased blood flow and a release in muscle tension, as the heat helps your body absorb the massage essential oils more effectively. These effects are especially useful when you’re trying to learn how to boost your immune system when sick

Healthy Skin: Feed Your Skin Healthy skin care’s newest taste makers are fresh from the market. Nothing replaces the whole-body benefits of a healthy diet.  But, when it comes to nourishment, skin is often given the left overs. “Our skin, the largest organ of the body, is the last in line at the nutritional banquet,” says Sally Penford, Education Manager for Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute.  “There isn’t much to fill up on because the brain, heart and other essential organs have first dibs.” While a healthy diet will always positively impact your skin, there’s no denying the added benefit of nutrient-infused skin care for healthy skin.  Medical research proves that skin attains higher levels of antioxidants (Vitamin C and vitamin E( when they’re applied topically versus ingested. Penford recommends doubling up for lasting healthy skin benefits.  Make fruits and veggies your main dish, then order a side of skin care containing these clinically-proven provisions. Aromatherapy Disinfectant Room Mist

Aromatherapy Disinfectant Room Mist Fast, easy recipe for Aromatherapy room spray 1 x 4oz Glass or Metal Spray Bottle3 Tablespoons (1.5 fl. oz) Distilled Water3 Tablespoons (1.5 fl. oz) of Witch Hazel10 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil12 Drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil12 Drops Lemon Essential Oil4 Drops Pine Scotch Essential Oil This aromatherapy mix is perfect for the bathroom because of its refreshing, clean smell but also for its disinfecting properties. By making it yourself, you know every single ingredient and can rest assured that it’s all aromatherapy and completely natural! It also takes less than 5 minutes to make. I would recommend that you use glass or metal implements/tools when measuring and pouring the essential oils as they can literally eat through plastic. For the same reason, don’t use a plastic spray/mist bottle. Directions Fill the spray bottle with 1.5 fl. ounces of distilled water and 1.5 fl. ounces of witch hazel. (Even though a 4 oz. bottle is suggested, leave about 1 fl. oz. unfilled so you can shake the bottle well immediately before each use.) Then, add the essential oils. After you first make and try the spray, let it sit for about a day before making a conclusion that the aroma is too weak; the aroma can change after the air freshener has had time to sit and the essential oils have had a chance to “marry.” Tips & Insights Witch hazel is a hydrosol distilled from the bark and leaves of the witch hazel plant. It keeps the oil emulsified in the water and smells much better than alcohol. It also helps the essential oils retain their fragrance for a longer time. Be careful to not overfill your sprayer bottles. This will leave room for the spray to be shaken well, and it also ensures that the essential oil doesn’t float to the very top between uses and eat at the rubber gasket contained in the sprayer mechanism. Safety & Storage Caution! Many aromatherapy essential oils are contraindicated for use during pregnancy and for those with certain health conditions, such as high blood pressure and epilepsy so be sure to research the ones you wish to use if you have pre-existing conditions. Likewise, be courteous when using your spray around others. Safe Handling of Essential Oils When using aromatherapy essential oils, avoid direct contact with the skin (tea tree and lavender are an exception), mucuous membranes, and eyes. If eye contact occurs, flush the eyes with water for several minutes (e.g., 15-20) and consult a doctor if irritation persists. If skin contact occurs, immediately wash with warm soapy water. Storage of Essential Oils It’s important to store your essential oils in dark-colored glass bottles, such as amber or cobalt blue, out of sunlight and direct heat to avoid the chemical constituents from changing and thereby affecting their safety and therapeutic actions.

Uplifting Orange Essential Oil

Part 7: Leading Uses of Orange Essential Oil Orange essential oil was first recognized for it’s healing properties in ancient China. It is a powerful, uplifting oil full of brightness and zest! Think of the sunny, bright orange color of the fruit. Imagine the juicy sweetness that flows into your mouth as you bite into a segment. This is the essence of an orange that is brought to you through the essential oil of this amazing plant! It is no wonder that in ancient times, the orange was revered as “the fruit of the Gods”. Did you know that the first Oranges arrived in Florida in 1565? Today, orange oil stands as a powerful ingredient in household cleaners, perfumes, and body care products. It is the go-to choice for those looking to incorporate natural elements into their medical treatments. This versatile oil effectively addresses anxiety, stress, insomnia, and digestive issues. Moreover, it demonstrates significant potential as both a cancer preventative and a treatment. Practical Uses of Orange Essential Oil: Orange Blends Very Well With: Orange essential oil is one of those oils that blends extremely well with and compliments other oils. Below are some of the oils we most love to combine it with: Precautions Firstly, please make you are not allergic before using it anywhere on your body. We recommend doing a patch test. Apply a few drops to the inside of your arm and then watch for any reaction. Orange oil contains limonene which can irritate your skin. For that reason, always use it diluted in a base oil when using it on your skin. You can choose grape seed, jojoba, or coconut oil. Remember that essential oils are absorbed into the body via the nose and pores (hair follicle on your skin). From there they enter the bloodstream and circulate throughout the body. So whether you diffuse the oil or apply it to your body, it will enter your blood stream. Also, most citrus oils can cause photosensitivity (sensitive to sun burn) so remember that when applying it to your skin. Geranium Essential Oil bottle with flowers
Body & Mind, Body Care

Part 6: Uses of Geranium Essential Oil

Part 6: Uses of Geranium Essential Oil If you’re like me, geranium bring up thoughts of grandmothers and sunny window sills. While all 700 varieties of geranium can produce essential oil, most can’t produce enough to be used successfully. Rose geranium essential oil is derived from Pelargonium graveolens whereas the more commonly seen geranium oil is from Pelargonium odorantissimum. Both have floral tones, but Pelargonium graveolens has a rosier scent. It is the more expensive of the two types. Some unscrupulous providers may try to sell essential oil labeled rose geranium. However, it might be made from a different plant. Be sure to check your label if you decide to go with rose geranium over regular geranium essential oil. The Positive Effects Geranium Essential Oil Can Have Geranium essential oil is well known for its balancing trait. It is especially popular in mental, emotional, and hormonal balancing treatments. It is stimulating to the adrenal cortex as well as the lymphatic system. A healing and repairing oil, Geranium essential oil is a wonderful treatment for wounds. It’s recognized for its ability to heal everything from a simple cut to frostbite and athlete’s foot. This gentle oil is one that can be applied neat. Just apply it directly to your cut, bruise, burn, or skin infection. You can use it a few times a day. Summary of Uses: Other Properties of Geranium Essential Oil Geranium’s sweet smell makes it a common addition in the fragrance industry. If you like its sweet, rosey aroma consider using it as a simple personal fragrance. Mix it with a little carrier oil or lotion and use it anywhere you would use perfume. It can be a great mood booster. Use it the next time you have to go into a stressful situation. This could be a tough meeting or dinner with the in-laws. See if it doesn’t help you stay balanced, calm and your true, amazing self! As always, consult your medical provider before use. Pregnant and nursing women are advised not to use geranium essential oil since it does impact hormone levels. Geranium essential oil has blood cell constricting properties. Therefore, it may be contraindicated for folks with high blood pressure. It could also affect those with other cardiovascular diseases. How we use Geranium Essential Oil at Balance Spa We love getting creative with our essential oils uses! For geranium, we use it in treatments because of its beautiful smell. We also use it in and around the spa. During a massage, we first ask our client if they like the floral aroma of geranium. If they do, we add a few drops to our massage cream. We also perform inhalation at the beginning and end of the massage. Using geranium during a massage creates a feeling of confidence, well being and luxury. We used geranium in several ways in and around the spa. We diffuse it, added it to steam towels, and put a few drops in our floor cleaning water. If you’re not a fan of floral aromas, may we suggest orange, eucalyptus or peppermint? If all this discussion of essential oils has you in the mood for a massage, book here!

Cupping Massage with silicone cup
Body & Mind, Body Care, Massage

Can Cupping Massage Help Your Injuries or Pain?

Can Cupping Massage Help Your Injuries or Pain? What exactly is Cupping Massage? Cupping massage is the application of silicone, plastic or glass cups on your body for the purpose of creating suction. The vacuum (strong suction) created by the cups is used for healing purposes for muscular injuries, aches and pains. Massage cups are used externally on the body on most areas such as arms, legs, back and also joints. The suction pulls blood towards the cup which increases blood flow and brings relief to areas of tightness or stagnation. Massage cupping can feel either mildly uncomfortable or really good on tight, sore muscles depending on the pressure that is applied by the therapist. Cupping massage (a.k.a suction therapy), is one of the oldest and most globally practiced medical treatments in human history! It was first popularized in Egypt dating back 3,500 years, where its use is seen repeatedly throughout hieroglyphic records. Therapeutic Benefits of Cupping The negative pressure caused by cupping therapy releases rigid tissue, drains excess fluids and loosens muscle knots. Toxins and stagnation are brought to the surface of the skin and are then flushed out by the lymphatic system. Similarly, injured tissue is repaired faster by bringing fresh blood, nutrients and oxygen to affected areas by the negative pressure. Lastly, the strong suction of the cups pulls soft tissues from underlying structures, thereby loosening adhesions. While the cups are on the skin, the pore expands and discharges some of the waste and toxins in the blood. One may wonder what is cupping massage’s effect on the lymphatic system? In reality, it has many similar benefits to Lymphatic Drainage Massage. Stationary Cupping Stationary cupping is done by placing and leaving one or more cups on a specific area of your body. The cups create a vacuum and the suction then draws the skin up. This suction causes blood to rush to the area, thereby increasing local circulation. If the cups remain in place for long enough, dark cirlces will form where the cups were placed. Many wonder what cupping massage entails and if it leaves bruises, but it’s quite different. These darker circles may indicate areas of higher toxicity or stagnation. They are actually not bruises, but discoloration caused by the blood pooling at the surface of the skin. Moving Massage Cupping When cups are moved over the body, rather than being left in one spot, we refer to it as “moving cupping”. This can be done with different sizes and types of cups and the pressure is adjusted to your preference. Moving cupping can be done on large muscles like the legs or even around joints such as the shoulder. The pulling and stretching of the connective structures around the joint can also improve your range of motion. For those curious about what cupping massage is, moving cupping provides an option with its own benefits. Massage Cupping Effects on The Skin Cupping expands the blood vessels of the skin, causing an increase of: Cupping Effects on Muscles & Joints At Balance Spa we incorporate both moving and stationary cupping into our cupping treatments. Improve Your Skin Health with Exercise

Improve Your Skin Health with Exercise Better Skin Health is Another Good Reason to Exercise! As an esthetician, I’m often asked for practical tips on maintaining skin health . There is one incredibly powerful treatment that can cost you little or nothing. Is available to everyone and works wonders for all types of skin at any age. This treatment is very often overlooked but really should not be ignored and is (drum roll please) exercise! We all know the multitude of reasons that exercise is good for you. Now you can add skin health as yet another reason to get up and get moving. Help the Healing For those of us plagued with breakouts and are concerned about scarring….read on. A preliminary study published in the Journal of Gerontology found that elderly participants who had followed a one month exercise routine experienced significantly faster wound healing times than study participants who had not done so. Among the most commonly studied health behaviors (e.g., smoking, diet, exercise), physical exercise is especially relevant to wound healing and healthy skin as it influences multiple components of the wound-healing system, including the immune system and our bodies ability to manage psychological stress. Sweat it Out For Better Skin Health The body only has so many ways to rid itself of toxins — the kidneys, the liver, and the skin. By increasing blood flow to the skin, cellular debris are more easily flushed out of the system. Sweating is almost like cleaning your skin from the inside out. Once you are done getting all nice and sweaty of course it’s extremely important to clean your skin. Leaving perspiration sitting on your skin for too long can cause sensitivity and irritation. Always shower after a workout to prevent bacterial or fungal infections that may occur from dirt becoming impacted in skin follicles. If you work out a few times a day, use a mild cleanser so as not to overly irritate your skin. Get Your Beauty Sleep Remember how well you slept the last time you had a really intensive workout? We don’t need to read any studies to know that exercise improves our quality, depth and duration of sleep. Dr. Leslie Baumann M.D, advises that both lack of sleep and stress prompt our bodies to produce a hormone called cortisol, which causes blood sugar levels in our bodies to rise. This can lead to weight gain and heart problems. Recent research is showing how the connection between cortisol production, stress and lack of sleep can affect our skin health. Exercise More = Stress Less The mind/body benefits of regular exercise and its ability to reduce stress may extend to your complexion. Stress is known to boost hormone production. It suppresses the body’s ability to heal. Regular workouts can keep stress under control. They may also help manage challenging skin health conditions. Though studies are small, some show that stress may worsen, if not actually trigger, acne. Sebaceous glands, which produce oil in the skin, are also influenced by stress hormones. Stress may also trigger flare-ups of psoriasis. When you’re feeling tense, let exercise keep any agitated frown lines at bay, too. Just Glow Your skin produces more natural oils after a good workout. These oils help skin look supple and healthy. Skip the blush. Exercise gives you that fresh, healthy skin glow. It makes people wonder what you’ve been up to!! Keep in mind that exercise doesn’t have to leave you panting on the floor! A brisk walk in the fresh and some stretching can work wonders for you and your skin. Add in a friend the human or furry kind and your workout can help ease stress even more. Find the right exercise regimen that provides just the right level of challenge for you and be consistent. Whatever you choose, just keep moving! If severe breakouts are not improving, read our acne post and consider booking a acne facial with us.
