What You’ll Need for At-Home Castor Oil Therapy

You can get the benefits of castor oil for pain relief at home with just 5 items:

  • Cold-pressed castor oil — Be sure you use one labeled for human use and not an industrial variety
  • Heating pad, hot water bottle, or heated stones
  • Plastic garbage bag or plastic wrap
  • Two or three one-foot square pieces of wool, cotton flannel, or similar material
  • A large bath towel

Steps for Using Castor Oil for Pain Relief

Castor oil can be messy. You’ll want to follow these steps to keep things clean, tidy, and relaxing:

  • Step 1: Put the bath towel down between yourself and any bedding or furniture.
  • Step 2: Soak the wool or cotton in oil and place it against the skin. For general use, you can put the material on your abdomen. Put the material on the affected area for lower back or other localized pain.
  • Step 3: Next, put your plastic garbage bag over the soaked material and your heating pad over that. The plastic keeps the moisture from your heating pad.
  • Step 4: Keep the heating pad turned to the warmest setting that is tolerable. Keep the pack in place for an hour.
  • Step 5: Any remaining oil on the skin should be rubbed in for maximum effect. You can also just wipe it off.

Steps for Using Castor Oil for Massage Benefits

Castor oil’s anti-inflammatory properties make it an excellent massage oil for relieving arthritic joints, nerve inflammation, and sore muscles. You can also use it at home as a direct application on the skin for topical issues like wounds and other issues described earlier.

  • Step 1: Just rub a small amount on the area.
  • Step 2: Castor oil has a high viscosity, meaning it’s very thick. This is fine if you’re massaging feet or elbows. However, other parts of the body can be combined with carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil. You’ll get some of the benefits without the thick stickiness.
  • Step 3: Wash your hands after use. Remember that some conditions, like ringworm, can spread through touch. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after applying the oil.

This usually feels like a wave of pressure relief. Sometimes, the release is in areas far from where the therapist is working because fascia is a continuous network. You’ll feel that release layer by layer, reaching further and deeper with each session.

Although the therapist’s hands are the main tool, some may also use gentle methods like metal or acrylic tools, or cupping, to warm up especially tight areas. These are used carefully, as fascia responds best to consistent, gentle pressure and does not respond well to force.

If you’re used to deep massage with heavy pressure, you might wonder: Why does your therapist take such a gentle, unhurried approach with Myofascial Release? Let’s look at the difference between myofascial release vs deep tissue.

Well, the quick, heavy strokes of a deep massage only reach the elastic barrier. They don’t affect fascia.

To go deeper, research shows the body needs at least 90 seconds (sometimes more) for the collagen fibers to begin unwinding and for the ground substance to soften and become more fluid-like.

Only then can the collagen fibers lengthen and the bounded collagen fiber cross-linkages begin to break apart.

This is why your therapist will be using gentle pressure with slow and sustained movements, following the tissues and allowing them to unwind.

MRT can help release scar tissue. At times, your therapist may add a gentle, strategic pull on your arm or leg. If you have scar tissue, they might also use a specific scar release technique to target it.

Your therapist may also incorporate unique techniques like thoracic, respiratory, transverse diaphragm, or pelvic release to support the benefits of myofascial release.

Each is performed with proper hand placement, appropriate pressure, and enough time for the fascia to respond and release naturally.

Myofascial release therapy demonstration

Remember, collagen fibers are as strong as steel and can easily withstand up to 2000 lbs per square inch! This impressive strength is one reason fascia doesn’t respond well to forceful techniques. It requires patience, precision, and the right approach, especially when dealing with areas that often feel tight or restricted.

Take the Iliotibial Band (ITB), for example. Many people try to stretch or foam-roll it, but it’s nearly impossible to release on your own. That’s because the ITB itself can’t be stretched — it’s too dense and strong.

Instead, it’s more effective to target the surrounding muscles that influence it, like the Tensor Fasciae Latae (TFL) and Gluteus Maximus. These muscles feed into the ITB, which runs down the outside of your leg and attaches to the tibia, just below the knee.

The ITB often feels tight because it’s compensating for internal rotation in the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (lower leg). When the hip and lower back muscles can’t fully stabilize the leg, the fascia picks up the slack.

Quick, forceful movements won’t fix this.

You can’t push or knead fascia into compliance. In fact, doing so may cause it to contract and resist even more, leading to only temporary relief with no lasting change.

Although fascia is a continuous system, it’s organized into about 12 major fascial chains. This is a concept popularized by anatomist and LMT Thomas Myers.

These chains represent the lines of force throughout your body, connecting movements across the front, back, sides, arms, and even diagonally (spiral and functional lines).

To release these deeply interconnected patterns, your therapist will need time and multiple sessions to work through the different layers.

Myofascial Release is a slow, layered, and gradual process. Many compare it to peeling an onion, layer after layer. That’s why treatment packages with multiple sessions are often most effective.

Myofascial release can offer major benefits of for many common types of pain, including:

Therefore it is the fascia that ultimately determines the length and function of its muscular components.”

In one of his lectures, I personally heard him say that, instead of thinking that the human body has over 650 separate muscles, we should be thinking that the body has fascia containing a muscle with 650 different compartments. Now, that is something interesting to consider, as it puts everything in a slightly different perspective.

Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of myofascial release for a condition like plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis causes pain on the bottom of the foot, typically near the inner part of the heel, where the plantar fascia attaches.

However, that painful area isn’t usually the root of the problem.

The plantar fascia is part of the Superficial Back Line: One of the 12 major fascial lines in the body. This line connects the plantar fascia to the periosteum (bone lining) of the heel, then continues:

  • Up into the calf muscles
  • Into the hamstrings
  • Through the sit bones
  • Via ligaments into the sacrum
  • Into the lumbo-sacral fascia and erector spinae muscles
  • Through the nuchal ligament at the back of the neck
  • And all the way to the brow ridge on the forehead

In many cases, the Achilles tendon and calf muscle restrictions play a major role in plantar fascia release.

Yet, tightness or fascia adhesions anywhere along the Superficial Back Line can contribute to the pain. That includes the lower back, neck, or even the fascia on the back of the skull.

 Lastly, it’s important to understand how fascia connects to our emotions.

We’re not just a collection of body parts, and our thoughts and experiences don’t live in the brain alone. The body–mind–spirit connection is well-recognized and deeply felt across many cultures and practices.

The body remembers every stress and trauma we’ve experienced.

  • Fascia responds by constricting, often alongside changes in breathing patterns. Over time, these restrictions can linger in the body if they’re not released.
  • Stress hormones can become stored in the layers of bound-up fascia. That’s why, during a Myofascial Release Therapy session, you might suddenly feel strong emotions or recall vivid memories.

This is completely natural, and incredibly healing. If tears come, let them. If you feel like laughing, go ahead. And if it’s something in between, that’s valid too! Your body has two circulatory systems, one of them is your bloodstream and the other is your lymph system. It runs throughout your body, and has two pathways, one deep and one superficial. Lymph fluid itself is clear and colorless. It contains white blood cells that bathe your tissues in nutrients and drains them of toxins.  Your lymphatic system fights against infections as it courses through its pathways draining into your bloodstream. The origins of lymphatic drainage. Lymphatic massage, (sometimes called manual lymphatic drainage [MLD]), is a specialized form of medical massage created in the 1930’s by Dr. Emil Vodder. Dr Vodder was a Danish medical doctor who treated patients in the French Riviera.  He noticed that people who had chronic colds also had swollen lymph nodes. Along with his wife, Enid, who was also a medical doctor, he began to study the lymph system. He went on to develop a protocol using specific hand movements which stimulate and move the lymphatic fluid in the body.  In 1936, after four years of research they introduced this technique to the world in Paris, France. They spent the rest of their lives demonstrating and teaching this method. Dr. Vodder’s lymphatic massage techniques use rhythmic manipulations to stimulate lymph flow and fluid movement. After much success with his patients, he developed a series of techniques for a more systematic approach. Thish became known as Manual Lymph Drainage. 2. Don’t Leave Your Work Out Until Later

It is tough prioritizing when you want to get multiple activities squeezed into one day. But there is no reason to skip your workout, as a good workout will warm your muscles up nicely. I thought so, too. I mean, a pair of shoes lasts forever. And a deep tissue massage lasts 60 minutes. Sixty fleeting–albeit blissful–minutes. As you might have guessed, I’ve now changed my mind. The other day, I had a deep tissue massage for the first time ever. I know, I know– I’d been missing out. 20 years old and more than enough stress build-up to justify one, and still no massage. Actually, I lied: I’d had a 30-minute massage once, at a large chain massage emporium-type place, but that’s it.  Sigh… Sad, really. Anyways. My massage may technically only have lasted 60 minutes, but the experience had all these lasting impacts on my life that I hadn’t even anticipated. First let me just tell you about the experience of the 60 minutes themselves. You know all those knots in your back or the weird sharp pains you sometimes get that bother you all the time, but there’s nothing you can really do about them? Like, you can gripe and complain to the unwitting listeners around you, but let’s be real: they don’t care. They don’t physically feel your back pain and they don’t have any sort of power against it; so they can listen to you whine, but that’s where it ends. Well, telling my massage therapist was a whole different story. She cared. And she somehow magically had the skills to know exactly how to fix those knots and pains. She (her name was Patricia) told me she also works at a chiropractor’s office part-time, and has learned a lot there about fixing specific back problems. She knows how to target the exact problem areas so that they actually are fixed, instead of just glazing over them with the rest of the massage and leaving you needing more to really help the pain. After my deep tissue massage, the most problematic areas of my back got the exact attention and care they needed to ease the aches and pains. I know, #blessed. At the chain I’d been to for the 30 minute massage, there was none of that specificity. It was like I walked in and I walked out, barely even leaving them with my name; they didn’t think they’d see me again, so they were like “Peace out!” and I took the cue and left. But at this smaller spa, everything and everyone just tried harder to make sure I got the benefits from the deep tissue massage I deserved. Sure, I didn’t get the big-business bargains, but I got a way better massage. Worth it, in my opinion. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if I’d stumbled upon the best deep tissue massage in Boca Raton. So there was that. And then there’s the whole “zoning-out” process of the massage. It’s like you sink into this head space where it’s just you and your body and all the stress of life drains into the heated bed beneath you and you just lay there and… well, forget. That’s the real beauty of it I think. We’re all so weighed down by the constant craziness of to-do lists and responsibilities and other fruitless worries, like whether or not our hair looks okay. But none of that fluff really matters. When you’re in that room, all the nonsense tunes out for awhile, and you zone out and enter into this point of clarity where only the things that really, truly matter are left in your head; the rest has been filtered through. At the end of the deep tissue massage they do this head massage bit, where all the relaxation you’ve been feeling in your body finally permeates into your brain. It’s really kind of an amazing finale– you just lay there on your back and let the tension you didn’t know could be hiding in your scalp just fall away. And then it’s over. Emerging from a massage is perhaps the strangest experience to ever occur indoors. You put your clothes on, try to remember how it was you ever restricted your newly-massaged feet with shoes, and then sprout from the room like a tiny faun who’s forgotten how to exist in the normal business of everyday life. You emerge from the dimly lit room, and there’s your massage therapist, awaiting you with a smile and a cup of water. There’s tea and a hot towel awaiting you as well, as if you’re this revered goddess of serenity whose every need for comfort is effortlessly fulfilled. You pad your softened feet into the lobby of the spa and accept the water graciously, half expecting fountains to burst from the ground beneath you and ferns to grow from the walls. That initial feeling slowly wears off, of course. But the muscle tension release, stress evaporation, and other various benefits remain. They’ve sunken into your skin for you to keep. I experienced some of this later that same day. I exercise most days and have grown accustomed to experiencing the unpredictable aches and stiffness of my muscles during a workout. It often holds me back from working at my best. But after my massage that day, I didn’t have a single issue. In fact, during my workout I felt much more energized than I usually did. I could feel my blood flow work more efficiently during cardio and I was in a much better head space to push myself and get the most out of my hour. Who would’ve thunk that a relaxing massage would make me more motivated to run? So really, my body, my mind, and even my spirits were positively effected, and the 60 short minutes of the massage permeated their peaceful way through the rest of my day (and future days). An easy question to answer in hindsight: it was because of the money. I didn’t want to spend the money on a massage, something I viewed as fleeting. But that’s the root of the real problem. You know what’s fleeting? The joy of buying new shoes. Then they give you blisters and betray you, the novelty of the compliments wears off, and you’re left wanting to buy an even newer pair. A new purse is fleeting. A fancy new iPhone is fleeting.

People would rather spend money on material possessions–things that won’t bring you happiness or fulfillment or any sort of bodily rejuvenation or benefit– than on bettering themselves physically, mentally, or emotionally. Then, after indulging on many a perfume or handbag, they wonder why they aren’t happy. Their bank accounts may have dripped dry, but their lives aren’t any better. They don’t feel any better.

I’ve developed this mantra lately. Invest in experiences that better your inner self, rather than possessions that better your outer self. That’s what shoes do: they give off an external impression. But external impressions don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. In the end, what matters is what you walk away with: your experience, your everyday quality of life that eventuates because of how you feel.

That’s what a massage does– it makes you feel good. Your body feels refreshed, your mind wakes up and feels more equipped, more ready to take on whatever harsh challenges life has to throw at it. It’s the power of touch. It’s kind of an enigma to me, and I think to science, too. But it’s definitely real. They did this study over at the University of Miami with babies, where one group was talked to and the other was simply touched. The impacts on the babies were monumental, spanning throughout the rest of their lives. The kids not only benefited emotionally, but they even grew taller and became more healthy. That’s how powerful something seemingly so simple as touch can be.

Not only is the simple act of touch amazingly impactful, but massages specifically have even more lasting effects. For instance, your hormones become more regulated and your immune system gets a boost, meaning you probably won’t get sick as often once winter rolls around. Even your blood pressure is scientifically proven to be significantly lower after receiving a massage. So I’m not just crazy, and it’s really true that I felt my blood flow more fluidly: the science totally backs me up. That boost was a real process happening in my body, and I get to reap those benefits for a really long time.

Not only did I experience that whole myriad of benefits I talked about before, but I also found that towards the end of the massage (during that heavenly head massage bit I was telling you about earlier) I experienced a little enlightenment of my own. Wow, I thought. I haven’t really been taking care of myself lately. And that’s what it’s all about, right? Taking care of yourself: being kind to yourself, giving your body what it needs, treating your own mind with the respect it deserves no matter the stress of the day. It got me thinking about all the things I’d been neglecting to care for myself for, like taking time to breathe or taking time to invest in valuable friendships. It even reminded me of small things I’d been letting slide, like washing my face at the end of a long day or cutting my toenails. All those little things that fall to the wayside with the excuse of stress. And in 60 minutes, all that stress poured out, and just like that I was unclogged and my priorities were put back in order. Not to say that cutting my toenails became the item at the top of my priority list (though maybe it should have been, since they were pretty gross), but taking care of myself and the things that I think matter the most was. And that, along with the relaxation and muscle-tension release, makes the splurge well worth it.

  • Energy is described in Western culture as vigor, life, spirit, passion, power, and electromagnetism.
  • The Chinese define energy as life force, or Qi (pronounced “chee”).
  • This energy is found at a molecular level and known in Western medicine as “electromagnetism.” Electromagnetism holds the atoms in orbit around each other in your body.

Energy therapist Dr. John Veltheim puts it perfectly: ‘Science tells us that everything is energy and that matter is nothing more than energy in a different form.’

Meridians

‘Qi’ or energy flows through our bodies in specific channels called “meridians.” Try visualizing meridians by thinking of how blood flows through blood vessels.

Meridians are not visible like arteries or veins but can sometimes be seen with infrared imaging. It is through the meridians that the energy from our vital organs is transported to the body’s surface.
